Selenium

I first read about this mineral in Medical Medium: Secrets Behind Chronic & Mystery Illness & How to Finally Heal. My body, and your body, needs trace amounts of selenium to function well. And yet, I was totally unaware of it and the health benefits it offers.

Selenium

Plants take in selenium from the soil. Depending on geographic location and the quality of the soil, people can get the selenium that they need from consuming foods such as Brazil nuts, kiwis, avocados, greens, cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, eggplant and onions. Those who live in regions with insufficient selenium in the soil, or who aren’t eating selenium rich foods, can add this mineral through supplementation.

Selenium works in conjunction with vitamin E to prevent oxidative damage to the body. This powerful mineral is required for the body to create glutathione, a master antioxidant.

This supplement strengthens and supports thyroid tissue, protecting it from scarring due to the Epstein Barr Virus. It boosts the immune system, supports the central nervous system, and by supporting the thyroid, helps to stimulate the production of thyroid hormones T4 and T3.

By controlling free radicals and reducing inflammation, selenium can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, help to prevent cancer and aid with DNA repair. It also helps with detoxification in the body, easing stress on the liver.

I take one selenium capsule a day, and make sure I include selenium rich foods regularly in my diet. I’ve gone from knowing nothing about this mineral, to having a great appreciation for all that selenium does to keep me in optimal health!

Lobelia Herb

As a gardener, I have been familiar with a variety of the lobelia plant, known for its tiny attractive purplish blue or white flowers. I’ve planted it in containers in the backyard garden. When I read the chapter on the shingles virus, in Medical Medium by Anthony William, I learned that the plant, which is technically an herb, has health benefits as well. Anthony listed lobelia as a supplement to include, to fight the shingles virus. I ordered it immediately.

Lobelia Herb

Lobelia inflata, also called Indian tobacco, was originally used, many years ago, by people suffering from nicotine withdrawal. The herb’s health benefits include stimulating the respiratory system, relaxing and opening the lungs, and easing allergy and asthma symptoms and congestion. Lobelia has expectorant properties, making it useful as well for bronchitis.

As a diaphoretic, lobelia promotes perspiration, which may not sound like a benefit, but it helps to relieve fevers by cooling the skin and rids the body of toxins, while contributing to healthy blood circulation. Diaphoretics are useful in treating diarrhea, and liver and kidney disorders.

Lobelia Herb

Lobelia is also a powerful relaxant for smooth muscles and the nervous system, providing pain relief and easing spasms, especially in the respiratory system. And as I learned in the Medical Medium book, lobelia kills the shingles virus.

I was suffering greatly from severe sciatica when I began taking lobelia. The shingles virus had kept the nerves in both legs inflamed for years. I had tried everything to ease my discomfort. So there was no hesitation on my part in eliminating certain foods from my diet, and incorporating more fruits, veggies and supplements that targeted the virus, in an attempt to heal. I began feeling a difference in my legs in the first seven days. Within a few months the pain and inflammation had disappeared.

Lobelia is available in several forms, including capsule, tincture, dried loose leaf tea and powders. It’s also found in many over the counter cold remedies. I currently take it in capsule form, but I’d love to try it dried as a tea.

Steeping a small amount of lobelia leaves with sage, chamomile and peppermint would create a soothing and relaxing hot tea. And that would provide the perfect end to a busy day.

Barley Grass Juice Powder

I have known about barley grass and its healing properties for years, however I’ve never used it before. Recently Anthony William, author of Medical Medium and Life Changing Foods, posted an article about barley grass juice powder on his Facebook page. Intrigued, and at a place in my healing journey where I felt ready to try this supplement, I ordered the product.

This morning I added a tablespoon of barley grass juice powder to my freshly pressed celery juice. Alternately, this bright green powder can be added to smoothies, other juices or water. I confess I sniffed the powder before dropping a spoonful into my glass. I couldn’t detect an odor. There was simply a light, fresh scent.

Moments later I filled the glass with celery juice, fresh from my juicer.

According to Anthony, barley grass is a nutrient rich food that has been used since ancient times, for medicinal purposes and healing. The barley grass juice powder is a convenient way to consume this supplement, as it concentrates the nutrients and is easily digested and assimilated by the body.

Barley grass juice powder is rich in vitamins A, B and C, plus the minerals iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus. This supplement is also high in absorbable protein, contains 20 amino acids, and supplies enzymes that help the decomposition of fats in the body to go smoothly, balancing weight.

Barley grass juice powder is made from tender young shoots, harvested before the grass produces any grains.

I couldn’t taste the barley grass juice powder after mixing it in with my celery juice. I tend to sip my green juice, rather than drinking it quickly. As I neared the bottom of the glass I could tell the powder had settled there. Although I couldn’t taste a difference, I could detect the graininess of the powder. Tomorrow I will stir the mixture longer, or stir frequently as I am drinking.

For I will continue to add a spoonful of barley grass juice powder to my morning celery juice. The bag that I purchased should last at least 30 days. I am curious to see how my body responds to this health boosting supplement.

I am also quite serious about my healing journey. My health is crucial to my well being and to my future quality of life. Adding barley grass juice powder is another step toward being, and feeling, my absolute best.
